Anthony hosted a screening of Atlantic for a Science Gallery Dublin exhibition

Anthony curated a screening of the documentary Atlantic on Sunday, 5 November in partnership with Slow Food Dublin and the film’s director, Risteard Ó Domhnaill, as part of Science Gallery Dublin's IN CASE OF EMERGENCY exhibition.

The event was organised to highlight the collapse of Ireland’s indigenous fishing communities, but more importantly, to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable fishing practices in order to sustain and support coastal communities and our sea resources. Atlantic draws on stories from the most remote and breathtaking locations in the North Atlantic and at close quarters with some of the sea’s most captivating characters.

After the screening, Anthony hosted a panel discussion with three experts.

Sally Barnes, the founder and chief smoker at Woodcock Smokery in Skibbereen, Co Cork, was one of the panellists. For over 40 years, Sally has been smoking wild salmon and other wild fish like hake, pollock, kippers, tuna and mackerel. She is the only smoker in Ireland who is dedicated to smoking wild salmon. Sally is a crucial member of the Slow Food movement in Ireland. She has represented Ireland worldwide at Slow Food International events such as ‘Salone del Gusto’ in Turin and ‘Slowfish’ in Genoa.

Another panellist was Niall Sabongi, the chef and owner of Klaw in Temple Bar, Poké on Capel Street, and soon to open The Seafood Café on Fownes Street. Niall's seafood businesses offer 'casual and accessible' seafood, including a tasting of oysters from around the Irish coast. He is committed to sustainable seafood and has established a seafood wholesale business, Sustainable Seafood Ireland, to source the best fresh fish. Niall is one of Fáilte Ireland's food champions and frequently gives talks and demos on seafood at festivals and events across Ireland.

The third panellist was Risteard Ó Domhnaill, an award-winning director and cinematographer. He is known for his work on The Pipe (2010) and Atlantic (2016) and is the founder of Scannáin Inbhear/Inver Films. Risteard has received several awards, including the Best Irish Documentary at the Dublin International Film Festival and the 2016 Screen Director's Guild of Ireland Finders Series Award.

Atlantic Documentary

Narrated by Emmy Award-winning actor Brendan Gleeson, Atlantic follows the fortunes of three small fishing communities – in Ireland, Norway and Newfoundland – as they struggle to maintain their way of life despite mounting economic and ecological challenges. As the oil majors drive deeper into their fragile seas and the world’s largest fishing companies push fish stocks to the brink, coastal communities and the resources they rely on are fast approaching a point of no return.

Filmed in some of the most remote and breathtaking locations in the North Atlantic and at close quarters with some of the sea’s most captivating characters, Atlantic brings three very intimate stories from the global resource debate. It explores how modern-day communities must learn from the past to secure a brighter future.
